Special Project: Family Support Programs

The objective of this project was to increase family involvement in children's learning at the family support centre. During my experience at the OEYC, I found that through observations, families mainly focused on development and learning in cognitive domains (math, science and language). There was little emphasis on other domains, specifically fine motor skills.

To increase awareness and appreciation towards fine motor skills as well as family involvement, I created a workshop that highlighted important skills that are acquired from fine motor development, areas of learning and everyday activities that it can be applied to , and how families can facilitate development in their home, using simple and accessible materials. Activities were set up to provide examples for families to see what can be created at home such as: Bean Sorting Station, Flower Pressing, Sorting Coloured Cereal and Tracing Letters in Sugar. Families had the opportunity to interact and engage in the activities, as well as discuss personal experiences on their child's fine motor development.

This workshop was effective in bringing families together through discussion and sharing personal stories, as well as provide concrete examples for families to understand that activities can be created using materials that can be found around the house.
