Snoezelen: Multi Sensory Environment
Extending Snoezelen Outside of the Classroom
This project is intended to support families' interests in Snoezelen, which is a multi-sensory environment that includes materials like cushions, bubbles, light that are stimulating, while relaxing for children with exceptionalities. To support and extend parents' interests I collaborated with a colleague who specializes in graphic design, to create an information poster for families to be posted on site. This poster highlights the purpose of Snoezelen and how it supports development and learning.
Additionally with the poster, I created a Do-It-Yourself board that is meant to inspire families on how they can incorporate a multi-sensory environment in their home. This poster contains different representations of a Snoezelen room and cue cards are attached to, correspond to each element which describes alternatives to materials to include. The Snoezelen information panels were also accompanied with a sensory bin that I created for the children to use within the classroom. The items in the bin were carefully picked to cater needs of specific children but can be used in an open-ended manner. These items are shown in the pictures below:
The sensory bin was implemented in the Snoezelen Tent where children were able to explore the various sensory toys among the characteristics of the tent. Children also explored the characteristics of the sensory toys during the regular program's free play.
To conclude this project, a small parent-talk was hosted to explain and display the Snoezelen information poster, a sensory bin and the interactive poster. This project was intended to provide support for parents who were eager to connect their child's school environment to the home in an affordable and aesthetic way!
