In this art experience, the children had the opportunity to explore different art mediums including: pom poms, sponge, feathers. The children used these mediums to create different textures with the paint and also glued coloured streamers using Mod Podge. This was an open ended activity that was intended to be completed with families and their children. Family involvement was the main aspect of this activity and this took place in the Creative Arts Centre with a large group.

Learning Objectives & Outcomes from Early Learning for Every Child Today

ELECT 1.9 Interacting with Adults

  • Approaching adults as sources of security and support

  • Engaging adults in activities in positive ways

  • Seeing adults as resources in exploration and problem solving

ELECT 5.3: Senses

  • Sensory exploration of properties and functions of objects and materials, sensory discrimination of various properties and materials and sensory motor integration (eye hand coordination)

ELECT 4.7: Symbolic Thought and Representation

  • Ability to explain what they have created and what it represents.

ELECT 2.1: Expression of Feelings

  • Beginning to show self-conscious emotions like pride and expressing feelings in language.

Observations

  • The children would get mixed up with the uses of the mod podge and the paint, such as using the mod podge as paint. The caregivers guided the children by saying: "This is glue, you can stick the paper down." Caregivers also used hand over hand guidance to lead the child into sticking the paper down and applying the glue.

  • The children tried out different mediums: one child pressed the pom poms down onto the paper and another child brushed the feather lightly on the paper.

  • One child and caregiver became engaged in mixing the blue paint into the water and then red paint. The child exclaimed: "It's purple!".

Reflection & Outcomes

Providing different mediums to paint with as well as having the mod podge and streamers/tissue paper provided an opportunity for the children to explore textures and colours, such as seeing the coloured paint appear behind the streamers. However, the children were more engaged in the paint and the tools that can be used to paint. The use of the streamers required some encouragement and guidance from caregivers. To improve this activity, providing myself more time to set up the materials and enough materials for all children and families would have made this activity more effective.
