In this activity, the children participated in sorting out objects based on colour. Using the colour wheel as a guide for the various colours, the children matched objects like: blocks, connectors, lego pieces, plastic shapes and plastic figures to their corresponding colours. This was a large group activity and focused on cognitive skills.

Materials

  • Plastic and wooden blocks

  • Connectors

  • Plastic shapes

  • Plastic animals

  • Plastic pegs

  • Colour wheel

  • Paper

Learning Objectives & Outcomes from Early Learning for Every Child Today

ELECT 4.10 Classifying

  • sorting objects, pictures and things into groups, comparing, matching, sorting according to common properties, moving from random classification to classifying one, then two or more properties

ELECT 4.11 Seriating

  • describing relationships (smaller than, bigger than)

ELECT 4.13 Determining Quantity

  • counting to determine quantity, matching numbers to sets of objects

Language Used By the Children During the Activity

Taking turns to sort the objects: "You do this one and I will do this one!"
Making comparisons to personal objects/everyday life: "This is red like my car!"

Reflection & Outcome

Using concrete objects kept the children engaged and allowed them to explore properties of the shapes and materials offered. To facilitate engagement or to redirect the children, asking questions like: "Can you show me where this block belongs?" and "Does this green frog belong to the orange space?", was effective in helping the children focus on the task at hand. To improve this activity, I can use less materials because I found that using too many objects may have distracted the children from the objective of this activity.
