To support children's learning in literacy, I created tissue box monsters that represented 5 vowels: A, E, I, O and U. Creating vocabulary cards, the children were instructed to read and sound out the word on the card, and then identify the vowel. After identifying the vowel, the children fed the corresponding tissue box monsters! This simple activity allowed children to be aware of vowel sounds while they read, such as when a child was reading a short story and stated: "Car! The vowel is A!".
The objectives that were outlined in this activity from Ontario's Kindergarten Program were:
Demonstrate literacy behaviours that enable beginning writers to communicate with others
10.3: Write simple messages using a combination of pictures, symbols, knowledge of the correspondence between letters and sounds (phonics), and familiar words
Here are the materials to the activity:

The vowel monsters for children to match the words with the corresponding vowels on each box!
